NEW RULES: Canada Updates Port of Entry Work Permit Applications – Effective May 7, 2025
Starting May 7, 2025, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has implemented significant updates to work permit applications at Canadian ports of entry.
What’s changing?
Most foreign nationals will now be required to apply for their work permits from outside Canada. However, select groups can still apply directly at the border, including:
- U.S. citizens & permanent residents
- Professionals covered under Free Trade Agreements
- Eligible truck drivers with valid pre-approved permits
These changes are designed to streamline processing, ensure clearer guidelines for both applicants and CBSA/IRCC officers, and reduce delays.
